ASUS entertains with the F70
If you're on the lookout for a laptop that's less 'work' and more 'play', you might want to take a close look at the ASUS F70.
Boldly described as the world's first 17.3-inch 16:9 notebook, the glossy F70 is built for entertainment, specifically for catching up with your disc-based movie collection. Unless you've gone Blu-ray that is, as the F70 seems to lack the drive for high-def discs, although it does have a full 1080p HD display and Altec Lansing surround sound speakers for HD audio, so we're two-thirds of the way there. Shame ASUS couldn't go the extra...Read More »

Skype to arrive on the Nintendo DSi?
At GDC earlier this year, Nintendo's revered Creative Director, Shigeru Miyamoto, revealed in typical cryptic fashion that he was "interested in [a system with which] when you're walking in town with your DS, you can use various services."
What Miyamoto was actually suggesting is anyone's guess. But, with Skype already available for the PSP and Nintendo President Satoru Iwata stating previously that the company would avoid monthly mobile contracts, Skype was a strong favourite to be one of the "various services" Miyamoto was hinting at.
When asked whether this is what Nintendo was...Read More »

Sony and Microsoft aiming ‘beyond’ motion controllers
It’s a safe bet that both Sony and Microsoft will be intent on capturing some of the Nintendo Wii’s massive market share during the next generation of games consoles. Motion control provided by the iconic Wii Remote controllers has played an enormous part in the Wii’s success, but will Sony and Microsoft be content to keep playing catch up?
EA Sports boss and ex-Microsoft honcho, Peter Moore, doesn’t think so. In fact, he reckons both companies will be going “a step further”.
GameTrailers quizzed Moore about the future of motion controlled gaming and he replied: “I think that, knowing Microsoft in particular...Read More »
GTA Chinatown Wars sales nosedive
GTA Chinatown Wars is the highest rated game on the Nintendo DS with a 94% metacritic average, but critical acclaim does not guarantee sales success. Retail data released by NPD in the US, reveals that Grand Theft Auto’s DS outing is having a very hard time at retail.
A mere 88,704 copies were sold across the pond last month, falling a long way short of estimates. Analysts were divided in the run up to the release of the official figures – Wedbush Morgan’s renowned video game seer, Michael Pachter, was shooting for 450,000 sales, while even the conservative estimate of EEDAR’s Jesse...Read More »
Sony Ericsson cuts 2,000 jobs
If a company has just posted a first quarter loss of $381 million (€293m) and seen a 35 per cent drop in sales year-on-year, it's safe to assume costs will be have to be cut. Sadly for Sony Ericsson employees, those mean a 2,000-strong cut in staff.
The reduction is staff is the equivalent to 20 per cent of its workforce, a move Sony Ericsson hopes will restore some kind of profitability to the struggling handset maker. It's also on top of last year’s removal of 2,000 jobs. We suspect the remaining 8,000 staff are watching both the pennies...Read More »
MI5 on the lookout for new Q
MI5, the UK’s counter-intelligence agency and sister service to MI6, is on the lookout for a new Chief Scientific Advisor. Responsibilities of the role include “leading and co-ordinating the scientific work of the Security Service so that the Service continues to be supported by excellent science and technology advice”.
Yes, MI5 is seeking out a new Q to furnish their secret agents with all manner of high tech gadgets and gizmos. Somewhat disappointingly, it doesn’t look like invisible Aston Martins, jetpacks, remote controlled Beamers, exploding keychains or underwater Lotus’ are part of the remit, nor is admonishing Bond for breaking...Read More »
