OQO closes down, cancels service support
The credit crunch has claimed another victim as OQO shuts its doors and says its last farewell to gadget fans. Although it manufactured only a handful of different models in its nine year lifespan, OQO had some superb ideas for portable computing – namely to make it much smaller – which preceded the current netbook craze by some years.
“We are sad to report that due to financial constraints, OQO is not able to offer repair and service support at this time,” reads an official statement regarding the closure. “We are deeply sorry that despite our best intentions, we are unable to provide continued support for our faithful customers. Please accept our sincerest apologies.”
That means any devices that are being repaired will probably we working their way back to customers still broken, and all future support is off the table too.
Also, tragically, it means that the extremely promising OQO Model 2+, which was announced at CES and was due to launch this very day, will never see the light of day. It would have come with an Intel Atom CPU, 2GB RAM, touchscreen, OLED display and 3G connectivity and still have form factor small enough to slip into your pocket. Yes, we share your pain.
There is a faint glimmer of hope though: OQO’s technology and engineering team may live on a deal with an undisclosed PC vendor pans out. Our fingers are firmly crossed.
