Palm Pre set to lose iTunes syncing?

It was one of our 10 reasons for picking up a Palm Pre and was plugged as a feature by Palm ahead of the big launch, but the Palm Pre’s ability to sync with iTunes could have its days numbered.

In a statement on its support pages, Apple stated: ‘Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.’

It could simply be a statement of fact, but it could also be a veiled threat to Apple’s competitors to think twice before pitching iTunes as a bonus feature for phones, smartphones and media players. Owners of Palm Pres annd BlackBerries with extensive music and video collections on handsets, you have been warned. If you happen to be on the look out for an alternative, Doubletwist might be worth a look, offering cross-device compatibility and an iTunes-inspired interface, with no risk of your device suddenly being blocked in the near future.
