Sony launches the B-Series Walkman

Sony came back to form with its X-Series Walkman, but that hasn’t stopped the company’s boffins from knocking out more weird and wonderful Walkman variations, particularly in its native Japan. Like the pocket-sized B-Series Walkman.

Just launched in Sony’s homeland, the B-Series is likely to take aim at the shuffle (its obvious competitor) in the UK too, giving us the chance to try the new ‘Zap’ function first hand. Sadly the ‘Zap’ doesn’t turn your enemies into dust, it’s just a new gimmick for browsing through your music collection. Press the button and you get five-second clips of all your tunes. Hear one you like and you can play it. Useful if you can’t be bothered squinting at that tiny on-board screen, added novelty if you can.

Aside from that, this is your average mini media player with an above average battery life. That means a USB-based device that plays your digital files, throws in FM radio and voice recording, offers 2GB of storage and keeps going for 18 hours from a single charge. No news on price or availability, but we suspect cheap and not far off.
