Orange gets the leap on Toshiba TG01 smartphone

Having lost out to O2 on the Palm Pre, failing to break the same network’s stranglehold on the iPhone and having to share a half-exclusive with T-Mobile on the HTC Hero, Orange has stolen a march on it’s rivals by snaring the Toshiba TG01.

Orange splashed the long-awaited smartphone across its website and are the first network to confirm they’ll be carrying the Windows Mobile-loaded Tosh handset.

The page is no longer active suggesting that Toshiba may have pulled rank and requested details were pulled. Full details of the TG01’s arrival on the scene weren’t expected until the UK launch event on Wednesday 9th July, but Orange decided to end the speculation, announcing that it will be free on a £35-a-month tariff.

The long-awaited smartphone which posted a top 10 finish in T3’s Hot 100 Gadgets of 2009 will be going head to head with the iPhone 3GS, Palm Pre and HTC Hero.

We’ll have full details from the launch next Wednesday.
