Google boss busted with BlackBerry

Google CEO Eric Schmidt has committed something of a corporate faux pas: he’s been caught using a BlackBerry smartphone at a recent Sun Valley shindig.

As Google’s Android phone operating system is now in fierce competition with BlackBerry (and all the other smartphone platforms), this snafu is a bit like wearing leather to a furry convention. It gives a distinct impression that Google’s head honcho either isn’t that keen on the upcoming phone platform, or doesn’t find it suitable for his faced paced corporate lifestyle. Google’s PRs are probably suffering a collective seizure at this very moment.

Schmidt was caught red-handed (maybe that should be BlackHanded) when an Associated Press photographer snapped him taking photos of his own of reporters outside the Sun Valley Inn. And to complete the debacle, even if he wanted to say he was borrowing it from some soon-to-be-fired lackey, the handset has a convenient Google logo plastered on its back.

Ironically, Schmidt also has a seat on Apple’s board, so he obviously doesn’t think much of the iPhone either. Unless perhaps in wake of recent questions over whether his two positions represent a conflict of interest, he’s proving that he can shun both companies’ tech for the sake of fairness. Next thing you know, he’ll be using Internet Explorer and Yahoo! Mail.

Of course, with BlackBerry’s unbeatable email abilities and addictive qualities, we can easily imagine why a CEO of Schmidt’s calibre would want to stick with RIM. Maybe this episode will provide Android’s makers with more incentive to keep enhancing their push email service?
