Vodafone claims their network provides faster download speeds on the iPhone than both O2 and Orange. They say that after testing the iPhone on all three networks, they can confirm that their 3G coverage provides the fastest video downloads.

With iPhone sales at Orange starting today, we presume a Vodafone employee picked up a handset and ran a comparison with their own 3G network. Although Vodafone doesn’t intend on selling the iPhone until 2010.

This announcement, which was delivered in a newsletter to customers that had registered interest in an iPhone on Vodafone, demonstrates that Vodafone plans to compete on network performance rather than enter a pricing battle.

This strategy could prove fruitful as O2 customers have been vocally disappointed by their 3G network coverage in the past. Unfortunately the newsletter doesn’t say where the iPhones were tested or if they were tested at different locations.

However, Vodafone did say that the download time for a 10-minute video on YouTube on their iPhone was considerably faster than on the other networks. When all three iPhones are made available we’ll be sure to test them in the wild and let you know which really has the best coverage.
