Indulging in more than a little gaming nostalgia, Nintendo has confirmed that SNES classic Super Mario Kart will be available to Wii owners through Virtual Console on the Wii online shop.

You can remember what it was like to kart around Bowser’s Castle for 800 Wii points which in money terms is £4.80 to those hungry for some iconic gaming action.

Also set to get the Wii treatment is flight sim Pilotwings and Super Smash Bros. No prices or release dates have been confirmed for these two titles, but an appearance on the Virtual Console is expected before the end of the year.

While Nintendo pays homage to past glories, Ninty’s Shigeru Miyamoto is a little sceptical of what the future of the games industry holds with the impending arrival of Microsoft’s Project Natal and Sony’s PS3 motion controller.

Speaking to Official Nintendo Magazine on whether the industry could lose its uniqueness with more motion controllers set to hit the market Miyamoto said, “If everyone else is going to do exactly the same thing, unfortunately in this entertainment business that means less uniqueness, and uniqueness is what Nintendo has tried to realise."

Miyamoto is not worried about the future though and reassures Wii fans that there is more to come on the console front. "We don’t look to the future in one direction only," he said. "When you say that one element of our uniqueness might have been lost, you don’t really have to be concerned about that, because Nintendo always tries to find something new. I hope you are looking forward to our challenge to discover this new uniqueness!"
 

Nintendo has already dismissed talk of a Wii HD heading in 2010, and while laying on some classic gaming for the Wii public is likely to be appreciated, fans will surely be hoping for a bit more next year.
